The Art of Self-Care: Finding Balance

Hi sundays family,

Happy Summer! For many of us living in bustling cities like NYC, we are natural hustlers. In my 20s, I often found myself eating in front of my computer, convinced I didn’t have time for self-care. When asked why, I would say, “I’m not there yet. I have so much to prove about my self-worth.”

It wasn’t until my 30s that I realized the importance of balance. I discovered that a good night’s sleep can recharge you for the day ahead, and a small break from work can refresh your mind.

I’ve come to believe that self-care can be seamlessly integrated into daily life. A morning walk to work can set a positive tone for the day, an after-work manicure can help you unwind, treating yourself to a favorite restaurant once a week can bring joy, and a weekend trip can relax your mind and body.

It’s perfectly okay to strive for productivity, and it’s equally okay to take breaks for self-care. At the end of the day, we need our bodies to work for us and to feel happy. Taking care of ourselves is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Finding Balance

These are ten activities to introduce self-care into your life in small but meaningful ways.

1. Morning Walks

My favorite activity in the morning is to walk to Central Park. I grew up with a lot of nature, and being there I just feel like it gives me so much energy and can completely shift my mindset. It makes me feel calm in this busy city.

2. Mid-Week Manicures

This may seem like a superficial activity- it’s anything but skin deep! Getting a manicure is known to boost your mood. Whether it’s because of the fun of choosing a manicure color, or the relaxation of being pampered, or the social benefit of chit-chatting with your nail specialist. 3. Mindfulness Practices

I am not an expert in mindfulness practices myself, but I have learned many techniques that help promote mindfulness, and I will share an easy one with you: it’s called a minute body scan meditation. It helps me feel more connected to my body when I do this. The first step is be in a comfortable position, seated or standing, and then close your eyes. Bring your mental attention to the top of your head, and then slowly mentally scan your body from head to toe.

4. Treat Yourself to Your Favorite Food

This is always an easy way to boost my mood and also is the perfect thing to help me feel connected to family, traditions, and culture. I recently learned an interesting perspective, and I think it’s worth sharing here: “there are two ways that food can be used as a tool for self-care: nourishing your body so that it stays strong and resilient and nourishing your soul so that you feel satisfied and at peace.”

5. Take a Weekend Trip

Traveling is a unique experience that allows us to explore new lifestyles and enjoy a new location. When life begins feeling too routine and boring, a weekend trip is sure to shake things up and bring new adventures.

6. Time Management Apps

I am guilty of staring at my laptop and phone all day, and I know I’m not the only one. Luckily there are ways that people are using technology to help them break free from their addiction to it. One example is to set a timer to remind yourself to look away from your screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds. Consider using this time to look at something far away or to step outside for fresh air. My favorite time management technique is the Pomodoro method.

7. Dance to Your Favorite Song

Dancing is a fun and effective way to boost my mood and get a bit of exercise. It’s a great way to shake off stress and re-energize, even if I only have a few minutes to spare. My advice is to pick a song that never fails to make you smile. It can be something upbeat and lively or a track that holds special meaning for you. Set aside 5-10 minutes in your day, whether it’s in the morning to start your day on a high note or during a break to re-energize yourself.

8. De-Clutter Your Desk

A cluttered workspace can contribute to a cluttered mind. Taking a few minutes to tidy up your desk can create a more organized and productive environment, helping you focus better and feel less stressed. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes. Start by clearing away unnecessary items and sorting through papers. Organize your supplies and make sure everything has its place. Wipe down your desk surface to remove dust and dirt.

9. Digital Detox Breaks

Spending long hours in front of screens can lead to eye strain, mental fatigue, and stress. Taking regular digital detox breaks can help you recharge and maintain a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Set reminders on your devices to take short breaks from screens. Additionally, designate certain times of the day to be completely screen-free, such as during meals or before bedtime.

10. Fifteen Minute Break

It may seem really small, but those fifteen minutes can completely change your mindset. It all depends on giving your body and soul what it needs during this break. Go outside, have a walk, meet friends for lunch or take a quick nap. Good things could come.
